Match Report
London Broncos
London Broncos stopped Cardiff Demons from winning three out of three finals as they thoroughly deserved a 22-10 win to take the 2023 Women’s Super League South title.
There were less than three minutes on the clock when Broncos thought they’d taken the lead. It was an excellent passing move from the hosts, finished well by Rebecca Jackson in the corner, but it was ruled out for a forward pass.
However, London weren’t to be denied. Nicole Kennedy picked the ball up near to the half-way line and beat allcomers to score under the sticks. Courtney Treco easily converted.
The lead was soon doubled as London continued to capitalise on the Cardiff errors. Ellie Hunt-Pain did well to dive over and Treco goaled again.
Leanne Burnell got the Demons back in the game in style. The club’s record points scorer, and joint record try scorer before the match, started from behind the half-way line, and like Kennedy before her, shrugged off everyone to score. Shaunni Davies converted.
Cardiff continued to hound the London defence and forced a goal-line drop-out. Rosie Carr was held up over the line, another drop-out was forced. But the Demons ran out of time and London went into the sheds with a 12-6 lead.
Demons started the second half where the left off in the first, on the attack. Burnell kicked a grubber through, it was mishandled and Burnell picked it up herself for her’s and Cardiff’s second try of the match. Davies couldn’t convert and London had a slender 12-10 advantage.
Then it was London’s turn. They forced repeat sets three times but still couldn’t break Cardiff’s defence. In the end, they opted for the two when awarded a penalty ten metres out and Treco made no mistake.
Eleri Michael, a try-scorer in last two finals, looked to keep up her one hundred percent record as she ran down the wing looking to level the scores, but she couldn’t beat Lauren Mueller who dragged her into touch.
Cardiff’s indiscipline was costing them. Again they gave away a penalty in front of goal and again Trecco kicked the two points.
Both sides were making errors as the game went into the closing stages. Rachel Humphreys dropped the ball in her own half but Cardiff couldn’t capitalise. Ffion Jones’ pass on the final tackle of a set was forward and the momentum was lost.
London sealed it with a minute to go. Lauren Mueller completed an excellent game by running past a tiring Demons defence to ground under the sticks. Trecco goaled and the Broncos celebrated.
